Pilates

Why Do Pilates?

Research has shown that body movements originate from the ‘core’ – a network of deep spinal muscles that connect to the spine and abdominal wall, forming a ‘muscular corset.’

When back pain occurs, the larger outer back muscles often go into spasm, overcompensating while the deeper stabilising muscles become less active. This imbalance can put excessive pressure on the joints.

Osteopaths and physiotherapists work to relieve joint restrictions, but the deep stabilising muscles often remain weak. This is why rehabilitation programmes like Pilates are crucial for restoring muscle balance and reducing the likelihood of recurring back pain.

What is Pilates?

Pilates uses slow, controlled, and fluid movements to primarily strengthen the ‘core’ muscles responsible for stabilising and supporting the spine, promoting better alignment and correcting postural issues.

The deep stabilising muscles are most effectively engaged when the spine is in a neutral position, which is essential for protecting the discs, joints, and ligaments.

This rehabilitation programme is designed to optimise the body's load-bearing mechanics, activate the right muscles, and address muscle imbalances to enhance overall movement and stability.

Pilates can help:

  • Back pain
  • Neck pain & Headaches
  • Tension & Stress
  • Postural problems
  • Stiffness & Tight muscles
  • and much more…

About Kay

Kay Tomlinson is a highly qualified Pilates instructor who tailors exercises to suit individual needs following a detailed osteopathic assessment. Kay trained at The British College of Osteopathic Medicine, earning qualifications in both Osteopathy and Naturopathy. She is also skilled in modern acupuncture and dry needling, techniques often used to address musculoskeletal issues. Additionally, she incorporates cranial osteopathy into some treatments, particularly when caring for infants and babies.
